Corona, CA: Open Air Farmers’ Market Makes Corona Its New Home

Residents of Corona and the surrounding areas won’t have to fantasize about easy access to fresh picked produce much longer. July 11, 2009 will bring about the opening of The Corona Certified Farmers’ Market just in time for summer.

In the works for a couple months, Team Corona has helped Farmers’ Market Management Company, Inc of San Diego fast track the process through the city. While still in the permitting process, things are lining up nicely and the market is expected to open on time.

Farmers’ Market Management Company, Inc. is owned and operated by Gale and George Cunningham. They have been farming since the 1970s and in 1975 they started their first Farmers’ Market in San Diego County. Currently they manage markets throughout Southern California including the ever successful Temecula Farmers’ Market, both Old Town and at the Temecula Promenade as well as the newly opened Canyon Lake Farmers’ Market.

The Corona Certified Farmers’ Market will be run by Special Events Coordinator Chaili Brittain who is the granddaughter of the Cunninghams and has been working with them for 10 years now. While she didn’t think this is what she would be doing upon

graduation from college with a degree in communications, Chaili knows her business and loves what she does. She said it has been a great experience working with the City of Corona and is looking forward to opening soon.

Farmers’ Market Management Company, Inc. was started originally as an outlet for the Cunninghams and others to sell their crops directly to the public. Much of their success can be directly linked to their philosophy to ‘uphold the highest standards of a certified farmers’ market’ according to Ms. Brittain. There are currently hundred of potential vendors on a wait list to participate in the Temecula Farmers’ Markets, some having been on the list for over a year.

It is impossible for small farmers with fewer than 50 acres to supply grocery store chains as meeting packaging and shipping requirements is cost prohibitive on such small scale. Direct marketing becomes the logical choice for distribution. While farmers participating in certified farmers’ markets do not have to adhere to the stringent requirements of the main stream grocery business, there are rules in place to help insure the integrity of their product. Farmers can only sell what is grown on their farms; brokering is not allowed. While much of the produce is organically grown it is only after going through the

certification process with the Department of Agriculture that farmers can claim to have certified organic produce.

The hope of the City of Corona and Farmers’ Market Management Company, Inc. is to bridge the gap between the farming community and the urban population. Corona has a long history of farming which has taken a back seat to development in recent years. Mayor Steve Nolan says “Our heritage is based on farming so it is a natural that we would finally have a certified farmers’ market to call our own.” With the introduction of The Corona Certified Farmers’ Market, Corona will get the best produce possible direct from the growers. The result will be an educational experience in healthy living and a true reinforcement of that small town feeling that Corona has always maintained.

In addition to produce, also available at The Corona Certified Farmers’ Market will be fresh cut flowers and hand made crafts by local artisans. A few prepared food vendors will be onsite with items such as BBQ and kettle corn. Brittain is hoping that the community will embrace this addition and is looking forward to the growth and establishment of the market over years to come.

The Corona Certified Farmers’ Market will be held every Saturday come rain or shine, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Main Street Market Place. It is located on the corner of Rincon and Main Street in the parking lot in front of Sears.

Hope to see you there!
